Lamps that lit hearts

It was a dark, cold evening. The gate slowly opened with a screech, and a little child and her mother walked into the garden. The child clung tightly to her mother for warmth.........she looked all around her and saw a lamp. It was on a rock; and even though its flame was too small to illuminate the whole place, it kept burning......... and for this reason, it looked very enigmatic.

"Mum, why do lamps burn?" asked the little child. "Simply because we light them."replied the mother. "But Ma, the candle burns itself to give light; why doesn't it just blow off itself?"said the girl again. Her mother seemed to be irritated and looked away."O.K fine, don't be upset." the child continued,"Just tell me why that small lamp....... which can't even light the whole garden....why is it burning itself? There is no need for it to do so...right?"

Her mother told her to get into the house quickly. The girl wanted to stay outside and look at the lamp for a little longer; but her mum's face made her understand that she couldn't do so. So she went in....hoping that that little lamp would last the whole night.


This Christmas, let us remember and be thankful for the light that is still there in this world.....and let us also thank all those lamps who have burnt themselves to try and show us the way.............the lamps who have lit our hearts and made us think.
